For some really absurd reason, twitter saves ALL images as PNG, but most images are always saved as heavily compressed JPG first. So you can do the change mentioned above to almost every image on twitter, but they all have visible compression. Yes, it's actual PNG, not like with FA where it's renamed JPG and no, I have no idea why the fuck twitter does this.

That's a given as like I said, twitter for some bloody reason heavily jpg compresses their stuff and then converts it into png. Only if it's .png:orig it's actually proper png.
Because png is now trying to losslessly save the jpg artifacts. Those artifacts are noisy and noise is insanely hard to compress losslessly. Results absurdly huge filesizes with absolutely zero benefits over original jpg. s have been banned for saving jpg files as png and ing them as superior, but we can't ban s for something natively done by twitter.
