I think it's a situation where Toto is simply accommodating Pika's want for a name, as he would otherwise just refer to himself via his species name (maybe...?), but he just sucks at naming things and took the first half of their species names and called it a day
Though in the end I'm sure Pika's also going to end up calling other Pokémon by their species name as is tradition in these PMD comics, so I'm wondering if there's a translation error on my part or if Tatsu just didn't put too much thought into it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Figured it again when he mentioned his own name, since it sounded like he just made it up on the spot. And I know Pika said it first, but it sounded less of "I will be called the way you want me to be." and more "Wait what? I spent so much (ten minutes) time thinking about what to call me and you figured it so fast? We're practically soulmates already!" But it seems like here is the space to talk about how surprising it is, so I must add my comment as well.
