MY PLACE s01:e19 - Mayoral Duties

“Okay” said Isabelle as she finished rummaging through a filing cabinet “let’s go over your duties as mayor!”

The mayor’s desk – my desk – was just behind hers at the back of the room. It had a big leather chair for me to sit in and a somewhat out of date computer already switched on. The wallpaper was of the elderly tortoise in the massive painting on the back wall. I can only assume that this guy was the previous mayor, he certainly left quite an impression. A warm cup of coffee was already sat there waiting for me. I’m not much of a coffee person but I didn’t want the kind gesture to go to waste. Besides, I could use the extra energy.

I looked through the sheets of paper placed before me.
The secretary talked for what felt like half an hour about legal hoo ha and political whatevers. That said, the job didn’t seem too complicated. Maybe it was just the way Isabelle explained it to me – she had a great way with words, so long as they were part of her job and nothing social.

She then went through the prerequisites for the town-development permit. Exciting stuff, I know.
“The first requirement” she explained “is that you own a house in town. Since you already own a house, you’re all set there!”

“Yeah” I sighed “thank goodness for that. I thought I had to give that Nook a ridiculous sum of money before he’d give me a roof over my head”

Isabelle giggled. “Oh, don’t be so hard on Mr Nook, mayor. He can sometimes be a bit… demanding, but he’s just doing his job. Okay, the second requirement for the town-development permit is to gain the approval of the citizens!”

I looked down at myself.
Oh boy.

“In order to gauge citizen approval” she continued “I’ll regularly survey the townsfolk to see what they think of you. The best way to raise your approval rating is to improve the town and the lives of those who live here.”

“Ah” I gulped “no pressure then?”

“Don’t worry mayor!” Isabelle said with a reassuring smile “I’m sure they’ve already taken a liking towards you! Now let’s see…” She picked up a sheet from the stack of paperwork and started closely at it. “According to a preliminary survey, your current approval rating is twenty… per…cent… oh.”

“How much do I need for the permit?”

“Well…” she strained, scratching the back of her head “the law requires that all applicants have a 100 percent approval rating. So… so let’s make that our goal!”

Twenty percent. Jeez.
Let’s see, there’s only five residents so that means only one person approves of me. Obviously, that’s Simon, and I didn’t even approach him. Making friends back home? Impossible. Getting strangers to think I’m a good leader? Dressed like this!? It’s gonna be a little tough.
