The Formless Oeden is the Evil Moon Thing. Oeden is the magical blood parasites called Blood Dregs. The reason why Oeden is called formless is be cause the blood dregs are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye. The reason why you can hear a baby's sobbing from every where while with sufficient Insight is be cause Mergo and Oeden are literally in side you. Rosmarinus directly describes the silver sacred mist produced from the blood bullets as making cries. Oeden and Mergo cry. All so Oeden is directly said to be secretly seeking blood and Mergo is blood parasites too. So this all makes sense that Oeden is the Evil Moon Thing

Oeden wants to kill Mergo and devour his Blood Memories be cause Mergo was a mistake by Oeden. Oeden got a part of his conciousness torn off and that made Mergo. That is why Oeden's chest is ripped open. Cut content from the artbook had Oeden devour Blood Memories (Messengers) to empower him and regrow his chest and grow his wings much greater. Presumably that would have taken place after you killed Mergo.

Messengers (Blood Memories) are essentially people who injected Blood Dregs (Formless Oeden and Mergo) in to them selves but not enough to transform with the magical blood parasites. So when their human body eventually died of old age or got stabbed or what ever, their consciousness continues in to the Nightmare with the very tiny amount of Insight they had from injecting the Blood Dregs.

Blood Memories is a better translation than Blood Echoes by the way.

This is why Blood Memories empower you, as it is essentially just broken down Insight (magic of the cosmos) to empower your body. Just like how runes in Elden Ring are tiny tiny bits of golden sap of the Elden Ring in eye balls.

Mensis Scholars messed up and thought Insight was literal eyes on the inside, but it is not. Insight is directly the magic of the cosmos as light. So Mergo severed their minds from their bodies and they be came Messengers to make up the Brain of Mensis as a mass of eyes, since they asked Mergo for eyes lining their brains.

beasts are on the path to be coming Great Ones too. They are just one type of transformation. The lower end of beasthood from injecting too little blood at a time causes the human to be rather mind less after transformation, but if they continue to eat Blood Dregs from the people they kill they can end up like the Suspicious Beggar where they can transform in to a human a gain using magic of the cosmos. If the person injects a ton of blood all the time, the transformation much stronger and leads to transformations like Vicar Emilia. She retained her mind immediately after transformation and can use her healing pendant.

All so the reason why hunters go blind from collapsing irises is be cause the blood parasites are devouring the iris muscles to let in more light of the cosmos (Insight), since the magical parasites manipulate the universe by devouring Insight which can then facilitate transformations of their host to summoning meteors to recreating entire cities like in the Hunter's Nightmare.

Augurs of Gos eat the Lumenwood flowers be cause they are in the shape of eyes (to eat the light) and the flowers are eating the light of the magic of the cosmos.
