As if ONI doesn't have bigger fish to fry and would rather harass a small and independent research expedition after some pissant researcher overstepped his bounds.

To be fair, this whole crew feels like a Red vs Blue scenario. No matter how many world ending schenanigans happen, at the end, it just feels like another minor inconvenience to the rest of the galaxy.

  • Yeah, Killbot and Philosophical Mind have the right ideas.

The Disquistors have plot armour, mainly because:

    - They never really cause anything that is really their fault. Technically, the UNSC researcher was acting out of line and attacked first (and blew up their Phatnom), so they can just blame him for his own facility being destroyed while they were defending themselves, and the UNSC is only demanding money for its repair, not charging them with a crime. They also didn't technically steal Thel's wife, because Lin is a grown-ass woman who can make her own decisions.

    - The armour Jayli wears was one of seven sets given to Thel 'Vadam as a gift from the UNSC and ONI, based on Spartan armour, and is meant to symbolise the alliance between humans and Sangheili. It's pretty powerful stuff, but it also has a tracker to track her vitals and life, so if she dies, the UNSC will track down her corpse and see if her death was caused by that alliance failing (ex. anti-Sangheili humans killed her, anti-human Sangheili killed her). Except the Sangheili don't know it has that tracker for that reason, so to keep her guard down, and to hammer home the fact that it's meant to show alliance, all human personnel who interact with the Special Operations: Orion units (like Jayli), are instructed to be really nice and cordial and forgiving with them. (Although, Jayli will probably get yelled at by Thel, if he learns she brandished a sword at a human while in her armour).

    - The Covenant were led by blind faith, with traditions drilled into each species meant to keep them submissive and in line. The Disquisitors are a research group designed to, as their motto goes, "Question the Unquestioned", and open the Cov Species eyes to the galaxy around them. Part of that job requires pushing buttons and breaking traditions, just to see which traditions are actually needed and which aren't. That's why Thel is so lenient with them blatantly disrespecting him: it bugs him, but he needs to make sure they aren't afraid to step out of line, granted they don't do anything really bad or stupid. Gotta scrape a knee or two before you learn how to ride a bike.
