If there's 2 things the past decade has taught me, it's that a patriot can look at their country's darker history and criticize it, while a nationalist will praise the darker history. MemberYeah this is a criticism that I wish was more common. I find it really annoying that whenever someone talks about how they 'hate the mainstream media' it just means they hate some news organizations and not the news as a whole. The fundamental problem has never been with what certain news networks say or biased reporting but that the whole industry of news is terrible inherently. Drama and fearmongering has always been profitable and the problem is only getting worse. Improvements in communication technologies have made it so news companies are most profitable when they can pump as many stories out as fast as possible. The internet has essentially made the sky the limit on how many stories they can release at a time. Journalists don't have time to do much research on stories when they're rewarded by how fast they can pump out articles. Following the news means getting a constant stream of dramatic stories with varying degrees of factual accuracy. It'd be nice if it was more profitable for news networks to actually research their stories before they release it.

And they "rationally" conclude that it's best not to have hope for something that either might not happen within their lifetime, or fail to meet the necessary expectations.
