Politics as of late has truly been a dumpster fire, especially with the Media Coverage.

  • We're just pretending the other guy isn't also demented (he's ranted about boats electrocuting sharks, when that had absolutely nothing to do with the conversation). Trump's 4 years younger than Biden. Also look up Project 2025 people, it's disturbing.

I really wish that both Trump and Biden would drop out, and for numerous reasons besides them being both over 75. Just give me a good candidate with a real chance of winning who’ll make us a Progressive Nation and to not worry about people’s rights being taken away by a disturbing plan from Right Wing Grifters.

I wish we could get a progressive nation, one that's anti-colonialism, pro-humanist, anti-corporate greed, and provides the best healthcare and education our nation can afford. I wish our leaders would take the strengths of other countries and use them to enhance our nation. If there's 2 things the past decade has taught me, it's that a patriot can look at their country's darker history and criticize it, while a nationalist will praise the darker history. And a patriot can acknowledge their nation's actual flaws and demand solutions, whereas a nationalist either fixates on nonexistent flaws, and\or offers terrible solutions to real flaws.

Politics has been that, and for a very long time, not with, but because of Media Coverage.

    https://youtu.be/pOiQsuQNXfA?t=242

Under the principle of "News As Entertainment", the already bewildering events of the world must be dramatized further. Theater has to be introduced, which in order to remain compelling. It must escalate the tension in the audience until releasing it in the climax of a narrative arc. At which point, the story would have to conclude.

In order for News' story to conclude, the world would have to end.

But in the meantime, it must not only maintain, but increase it's ratings. It must, in ever increasing exasperation, continue to increase the drama. Because it is a business that requires infinite growth.
And as tension rises in the audience, they become entranced in the scene, they not only begin to lose their suspension of disbelief, but become entrenched in the logic of what they believe. And they see nothing past the stage.

We are already, for the most part, aware that legacy media like radio, television, etc, operate on an Attention Economy.
But News As Entertainment, arguably(?) also commodifies Sanity, and in the process of selling an ever more exagerated world, consumes it, requiring greater amounts of it, in order to continue reaping the profits of ever more hysterical theater.

You're saying you want the representatives of two parties, which rely on each other, rely on News Coverage, rely on an ever intensifying drama to maintain their dynamics of power, to step down.
Why wish for that when you can vote for an independant, or write-in any name of your choosing, and thus disengage from the hyper-focused story that you can only vote for either democrat or republican?

If only ranked voting was a thing in the US

Yeah this is a criticism that I wish was more common. I find it really annoying that whenever someone talks about how they 'hate the mainstream media' it just means they hate some news organizations and not the news as a whole. The fundamental problem has never been with what certain news networks say or biased reporting but that the whole industry of news is terrible inherently. Drama and fearmongering has always been profitable and the problem is only getting worse. Improvements in communication technologies have made it so news companies are most profitable when they can pump as many stories out as fast as possible. The internet has essentially made the sky the limit on how many stories they can release at a time. Journalists don't have time to do much research on stories when they're rewarded by how fast they can pump out articles. Following the news means getting a constant stream of dramatic stories with varying degrees of factual accuracy. It'd be nice if it was more profitable for news networks to actually research their stories before they release it.

I could go on a tear about the internet's privatization in the 90s (like other utilities) but the way you said something on the flow of information, it.......
We have always seen the flow of new articles & other distributions as organic and of the internet's very nature. Which it may be, but what if that's a lot less true than it would be without the unchecked rush to make as many links to click as possible?
    "

it would be less true but it's not likely to happen, especially now

  • -sees this fucking conversation

-sees everyone's talking about news networks

-not a single person mentions NBC News

Am I going to be the only one to make a note about the peacock reporter being a clever visual gag pun for NBC news? because it is.

What sucks is that I know that the solution to ending such "heroic" nationalism is education, but these people have built up such an echo chamber that I cannot even begin to guess how to explain to someone that "no, just because they mail you a cheque for €200 once a year doesn't mean that it's not a big deal that the fuckers in high suits tried to sell our public health infrastructure to enrich themselves and their friends"

What really sucks is that I am fully aware that if we left them alone, these people would kill themselves off by cutting off their own access to social infrastructure, but they would insist on destroying our country as well *cough* *Hitler* *cough*

Plus some of the people who cut off their own access to social infrastructure are so dejected by how painfully slow our government is, or how incompetent our politicians are, so they here "Here are my plans for a better world." And they "rationally" conclude that it's best not to have hope for something that either might not happen within their lifetime, or fail to meet the necessary expectations. How many people were looking forward to Biden's student debt relief program only for it to be kicked around and blocked for years now, even when the Democrats had control of both the Legislative and Executive Branches.

I understand the echo chamber sentiment, I've been around plenty of people from my town who will not stop praising nationalism (and I'm in a blue state). I have plenty of crazy family , just before the 4th of July, I heard one of my younger cousins whining because they had to listen to a lecture about queer identities and how oppressed they felt having to know queer people exist. You'd think they'd been sent to a conversion camp.
