    I'm about to talk about axes.
    TLDR: The scene above isn't realistic, and that's okay. Nobody comes to porn for historic realism, and stone axes are an extremely outdated technology.

    The above scene is almost perfect for metal tools (axe shape and safety concerns only). Metal and stone tools are very different, because the materials aren't interchangable. You won't find stone saws outside of The Flintstones, and as a consequence you wouldn't have nicely squared-off logs for splitting.
    The axes themselves lose points for having chipped edges (prone to shattering) rather than ground and polished, but gain points for being seated in a hole in the shaft of the handle (albeit, the shape is wrong). There are lots of ways stone axes were attached to handles, but the above method was popular for tens of thousands of years of our history.
    Our neolithic ancestors had easier ways of getting firewood than the labor-intensive process of chopping whole tree trunks. More common would have been thinner branches, maybe the thickness of your wrist. Deadwood is preferred due to ease of collection and processing.
    If they did need to split larger logs for one reason or another, they'd do it by hammering a number of wedges into the piece of timber, forcing the wood apart bit by bit. Need to shape tough wood? Carve it away with a celt (stone chisel) slowly, or carefully burn it away with hot embers and blown air.
