MemberThere actually is an answer for that, surprisingly enough. Back in Gen 1, which is where Mr. Mime was introduced, there were no genders, and considering Mr. Mime's appearance, the translation team thought the name worked well enough (In Japanese Mr. Mime's name is Barrierd). Unfortunately, that created a problem once genders were introduced in Gen 2, and the Pokemon Company has a bad habit of not fixing things like that.
I actually have fanart of a female version of Mr. Mime bookmarked though, if anyone wants to see it. I wish it was real...
