Try to ask, what is the individual's motive for lying about Indy? Will that motive cease to exist if Pen doesn't believe him and continues to see Indy?

We already know Alan has been harassing Indy at work, there is no indication whatsoever that he will stop simply because Pen doesn't believe him.
That isn't how abusive, obsessive scumbags function. They don't stop unless they're forced to stop.
There is more to conflict and storytelling than the obvious and immediate.
There's also more to storytelling than conflict, as was shown in the previous chapter, which was primarily getting to know the two main characters and was extremely enjoyable despite the low stakes.
