OOPS #366

This applies to many interactions in life. For example, if you're calling up tech , or to report a problem, or whatever else, then pouring your frustrations out on the person on the other end of the phone, who had nothing to do with your problem, will just make them defensive, and not motivated to help you past the bare minimum. However, if you set up the situation so that you're a person genuinely in need, and the person on the other end is the only one who can help you, and you appreciate the time and energy they're putting in to help you solve your issue, then that activates the ol' empathy responses, and suddenly they're a whole lot more motivated to put in the effort to get your problem solved, because you appreciate the help they're giving.

Plus they're probably used to just getting yelled at all day, and so the chance to actually help someone have a nice day is usually a sorely needed experience for them.

Blacklisted

If there’s anything that arrogant, self-righteous dickheads can’t resist, it’s an opportunity to be right. Or to hear themselves talk, at least. You catch more flies with honey, as the saying goes. And state secrets, so I hear.
Personally, I do not have the willpower and patience it takes to sit through all that once you’ve succesfully baited it out, but yeah, it’s a hell of a technique.
I have a feeling being a good diplomat is as much about technique as it is having a good cardiologist and the patience of a preschool teacher.

  • I very much want to know Vizlets thoughts about what just happened; would she know right away what kass just did, or would she need a moment to figure it out?

    Well played, little Diplomat merchant

  • Narklet never stood a chance. :p

To be honest, that description describes how I try to interact with people on this site, especially now that I'm on staff and am messaged by people with questions or issues. It's not born out of cynicism but in ing that the person on the other end of the message is a person just like me. I think it's helped me be an effective Janitor.

If you'd like to read more about this, a book I'd recommend is How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie.

  • Well that certainly surprised Vizlet. I only hope Kassie's smug face is as deserved as she thinks it is.

It would be hella hilarious if this backfires

Something tells me that Yinglets aren't very used to this type of mind game.

Even got him to agree that Kass would not leave his place of work and shifted to talking about his culture.

Narklet's assumptions based on ignorance of the details leading up to Kassen's current state, in the last , are kind of amusing.

Had Kassen been born as a female yinglet who happened to grow up in Val Salia instead of the victim of an [edit: Antiquity], "female yinglet" would probably not have all that much importance to humans.

  • Those last three sentence bubbles makes me think that Narklet is going to kidnap/imprison Kassen and teach her his idea about how to be a female yinglet

Yeah, I can see this as the start of an unintended Path that Kass just inadvertently kicked off... such as Narklet suddenly becoming absolutely convinced that he *Needs* to kick Vizlet to the curb and take over this Enclave, For It's Own Good. Then he can demonstrate that he can Make it a place for Lady Kass to Want to in earnest, and fully deploy his 'Ideas' on How Things Should Be Done in a Proper Enclave.

An unfortunate Boom to be sure. Then it would have to be followed with the realization that this was All Kass's Fault, and an Oceans 11 type rollout of zany characters to foil Narklet's ambitions, while convincing him that it was no ones fault, and maybe he's just not ready for the Authority he felt like flexing. Send him back South with ideas and plans to start somewhere more.. ready for him and his Dream Enclave.
